Natural Change Statement
Suelyn Yu’s work asks us to confront the changes that we as humans impose on the natural world. Inspired by before-and-after NASA satellite-imagery, her diptychs collapse landscape and self into a single conflicted consciousness. To choose oil—itself at the core of our crisis—as the medium of her work, reveals a deep tension between a desire to honor the beauty of the world and the stark reality of the human footprint.
For Suelyn, the NASA imagery inspired meditations on light and darkness that haunt her collection with a nostalgia for what once was. Her paintings bear witness to a loss both public and private, and allow us to reflect on our individual and collective culpability, while celebrating the light and beauty that remain in our world and in each of us.
